 Instructions

Preparation
1. Spray wood signboard with Americana Matte Spray Sealer to seal.
2. Sand with fine sandpaper.
3. Trace pattern onto tracing paper with pencil. Transfer oval, coffee cup with saucer, and checkered pattern onto wood surface using grey graphite paper and stylus. (Omit rest of design until later.)
4. Use ruler to help transfer straight lines for checkered area.

Instructions
5. Use ¾” flat brush to basecoat oval Dark Scarlet.
6. Use ¾” flat brush to basecoat top half of signboard Orange Sherbet.
7. Use ⅜” angle or #10 flat brush to fill in checkered pattern with Cotton Ball and Black Tie.
8. Use ⅜” angle brush to fill in coffee cup and saucer with Vanilla Shake and coffee with Cocoa Bean.
9. Outline around oval with Black Tie using #0 script brush.
10. Use ¾” flat brush to basecoat edges and back of signboard Black Tie.
11. Use #0 script brush to paint groove around signboard Dark Scarlet.
12. Allow everything to dry or use hair dryer to speed up drying time.
13. Use ¾” flat brush to blend corner load of Orange Sherbet in top half of oval.
14. Use ⅜” angle brush to blend corner load of Black Tie on bottom half of oval for shadow areas.
15. Allow to dry and then transfer remaining parts of pattern: spoon, coffee lettering, flowers, and stroke lines. (Omit steam coming from cup. That will be last step of project and should be done freehand if possible.)
16. Use Cotton Ball and #2 round brush for small areas and ⅜” angle brush for large areas to fill in highlight areas on the cup and saucer. (Refer to dotted lines on pattern for placement.) Use #4 blender brush to gently soften and blend edges. (Do one area at a time so you can easily blend and soften edges away.)
17. Mix Vanilla Shake and Steel Grey 1:1 for first shadow layer. (This goes in all shadow areas. Refer to photo for placement.)
18. Mix Vanilla Shake and Steel Grey 1:2 to deepen shadows. (This goes on top of first shadows, but you use less of it and it stays in darker areas.)
19. Use Steel Grey to deepen darkest shadows one more time. (You can even mix a little Black Tie into this color if you want shadows even darker.)
20. Allow to dry.
21. Tint some shadow areas with wash of Deep Turquoise using corner load on ⅜” angle brush. (Use color sparingly and thin it with 50% water.)
22. Use Black Tie and #10/0 script/liner brush to outline bottom edges of handle and cup. (Use #4 blender brush to soften line if it looks too pronounced. Refer to photo.) Don’t outline entire handle.
23. Use ⅜” angle brush to shade top of coffee area with corner load of Coffee Bean; deepen with Black Tie.
24. Use #2 round brush loaded with Vanilla Shake to make spiral in center of coffee. Use #4 blender brush to soften edges of spiral so it blends into coffee. (Wait to do steam.)
25. Fill in spoon with Steel Grey.
26. Shade with corner load of Black Tie on ⅜” angle brush. Blend color on top edge of spoon handle and on spoon where it connects to handle. (Use #4 blender brush to soften and blend edges when doing shadows and highlights.)
27. Highlight spoon with Cotton Ball using #10/0 script/liner brush. (Refer to photo; leave thin edge of Steel Grey between edge of spoon and highlight.)
28. Outline spoon with Black Tie using #10/0 script/liner brush. Soften with blender brush if the lines become too pronounced.
29. Fill in lettering with Deep Turquoise using #2 round brush.
30. Outline right edges of letters with Black Tie using #10/0 script/liner brush.
31. Add thin line of Cotton Ball in center of each letter using #10/0 script/liner.
32. Add strokes near cup with Deep Turquoise and #10/0 script/liner brush. Strokes on sides of signboard are done with Black Tie and same brush.
33. Use # 10/0 script/liner and Black Tie to paint flower lines. (Make some lines thicker than others to add interest.) Add some lines between flower petals with Poppy. Bottom left flower and leaves have some Dark Scarlet lines added where it overlaps into background shadow area.
34. Thin Cotton Ball with 50% to 80% water so color is very transparent. Use #2 round brush to load paint and wipe most of it off on palette before making strokes for steam rising from coffee.
35. Let dry completely. Seal with Americana Matte Spray Sealer for added protection
